Annual General Meeting & Important updates

Caring for our trail

image002.jpg

A huge thanks to our members that turned up recently to clean up the riverbank and care for vegetation plantings alongside the new levee bank cycleway.

On Sunday 7th March, Wagga Rail Trail members joined with Landcare volunteers to collect bags full of rubbish, weed and put protective bags around vulnerable shrubs.

This section of cycleway, near the railway viaduct, will be the first stage of our trail, and was planted out with more than 1000 native grasses and shrubs last year as part a joint revegetation project with Wagga Wagga Urban Landcare.

Re-establishing areas of native vegetation along the trail will ensure that the trail experience is appealing for users as well as stabilising and protecting the levee bank from erosion and improving habitat for local fauna.

We are planning to extend the planting area this year, so stay tuned for details mid-year.

NSW Rail Trail Forum

Since the opening of the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail almost a year ago, thousands of people have used the trail and the local economy is booming as a result.

To celebrate, a Rail Trails Forum and Family Fun Day will be held at Tumbarumba on the weekend of 9/10 April.

The Forum will take place on Friday 9th April at the Tumbarumba Bowling Club, and will include:

  • Hearing about the success of the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail one year on from its opening.

  • Listening to representatives from other rail trail committees around NSW share their stories.

  • Participating in a round table discussion about the way forward.

  • Learning from some experts on the nuts and bolts of Rail Trail development and construction.

Bicycle NSW, Rail Trails Australia and Rail Trails for NSW will also be premiering a video on the economic benefits of the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail in the local region.

Register for the full day for $40, including morning and afternoon tea and lunch.

The following day, a Family Fun Day will be held on the trail, where you can ride, walk, wheel or scoot the 21km rail trail and soak up all the scenery!

The weekend is hosted by Rail Trails Australia, Snowy Valleys Council and The Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail Committee.

Share your thoughts on cycling

Unknown-1.jpeg

With the construction of the new Active Travel paths around the city there has been a dramatic increase in people cycling for both commuting and for recreation.

In order to understand whether these pathways are meeting community expectations, Wagga Wagga City Council is asking residents to share their thoughts on all things cycling through an online cycling survey.

The results from the anonymous 10-minute survey will help Council gain an understanding of the current use and future demand for cycling infrastructure.

If you have used the new cycleways, take the survey and let Council know what you think. Consider telling Council how much we need a link that goes all the way to Ladysmith!

Over recent months our Committee members have been doing just that. We’ve met with Council Directors Darren Raeck and Warren Faulkner to share our thoughts on cycleway design and maintenance and it is hoped that our input will inform future planning and maintenance schedules.
