Funding News
Wagga Rail Trail Inc. recently submitted a funding application to the Humelink Community Investments and Benefits program, but unfortunately have been advised that our application was unsuccessful.
The application sought $240,000 to prepare the Wagga Rail Trail Business Case and Concept Design – the detailed planning required under the NSW Government Framework for the development of rail trails. While the outcome is disappointing, the process has positioned us well for future opportunities, and we will continue to pursue funding to progress this exciting project.
The Committee would like to warmly thank our Treasurer, Kerrie Cullis, for the significant work she put into preparing the application, as well as the support provided by Wagga Wagga City Council staff throughout the process. Their time, expertise and commitment are greatly appreciated.
We remain confident in the strong community support for the Wagga Rail Trail and will keep members updated on the next steps.
Wagga Rail Trail Steering Committee Taking Shape
At its meeting on Monday 11 August, Wagga Wagga City Council took another important step toward making the Wagga Rail Trail a reality.
Council has endorsed the draft Terms of Reference for a new Rail Trail Steering Committee, which will help guide the planning and development of the project. The Committee will comprise fourteen members, including:
Independent Chairperson
Council staff (non-voting): General Manager, Manager City Growth & Regional Assets, Project Engineer
Wagga Rail Trail Inc. representative
Riverina Highlands Rail Trail representative
Affected landholder representatives x 2
Wiradjuri representative
Community representatives x 3
WWCC Councillors x 2
The two elected Councillor representatives are Jenny McKinnon and Richard Foley.
Although Wagga Rail Trail Inc. made several suggestions relating to both the composition of the Steering Committee and the Terms of Reference, unfortunately none of these were adopted.
The function of the Steering Committee will be to carry out Stage One of the NSW Government Guidelines for Rail Trail formation, to enable WWCC to make a final approval decision and apply to the NSW Government for approval.
Council will soon be calling for expressions of interest from the community to join this Steering Committee. This is a great opportunity for local people with an interest in walking, cycling, tourism and regional development too contribute their knowledge and enthusiasm to shaping the future of the trail.
We’ll share more details about how you can apply as soon as the process opens. In the meantime, it’s exciting to see momentum building—one more milestone on the journey to a Wagga Rail Trail!
Active Travel Plan: Forest Hill link underway
Work on the Wagga Wagga City Council Active Travel Plan cycleway to Forest Hill is progressing well.
Much of the Kyeamba Avenue section has recently opened, giving residents a safe and accessible shared path to enjoy. Once complete, this trail will connect Kooringal Road with Kyeamba Avenue and ultimately Elizabeth Avenue, linking the communities of Kooringal, Lake Albert, Governor’s Hill, Brunslea Park and Forest Hill.
Importantly, this new path will also form the first stage of the future Wagga Rail Trail to Ladysmith, making it a key piece of active transport infrastructure for our region.
It’s exciting to see this project taking shape, with more opportunities for all of us to get out and about, stay active, and connect with neighbouring suburbs .. just in time for Spring!
